The Montessori Nursery

The Montessori method is based on the idea that young children can learn to read, write and calculate in the same natural way that they learn to walk and talk.
It encourages them to learn from their own needs, using all their senses. They choose their activities from the many possibilities we provide. Our aim is to facilitate their learning.
Learning becomes an exciting process of discovery, leading to concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a hunger to keep learning more.

No barriers

In this approach to education, it’s essential to create a warm, happy atmosphere that’s full of love.  We believe we’ve succeeded: the nursery is in its own building and has large, light classrooms where everything is designed on a smaller scale.  This encourages the children to be independent and do things for themselves.

Specialist staff

The Montessori method is unique and requires specialist teacher training.  Our nursery teachers received their qualifications from the Montessori College in London.  There is an accredited Montessori teacher in each classroom, together with a fully qualified helper.  Individual tuition is the rule: in our small classes, the teachers are able to make sure that each child is being stimulated intellectually.

Unique materials

Our Montessori-designed teaching materials spark interest in practical life, maths, languages, cultural studies, music, movement & mime, and elementary French.
The nursery classes also use their own outdoor classroom, the sports field, the playground and soft-play equipment in the gym.  Dance/Ballet is a regular part of the curriculum, too, led by a specialist visiting instructor.

Children enter Main School in the academic year that they become five.  Transition to the Main School starts in the last two terms of our nursery curriculum. Our Reception class teacher leads a transition programme, including regular sessions with the children, to ensure that the move from our nursery to our Main School is as smooth as possible.
